What is Reiki?
WHAT IS REIKI? Reiki is not a religious practice (though it does have a spiritual element), and it is not a form of massage. Reiki is a method of Energy Healing first popularized under that name by Mikao Usui (a Japanese Buddhist monk) in the early 1900′s. Ki (also known as Chi or Qi – the same as in Qi Gong and Martial Arts – or in Yoga as Prana and Kundalini) is the Universal Life Force or Energy. Every living organism contains Ki, or energy. It is well known in Western medicine that your brain and nervous system work on electrical impulses, and that manipulating magnetic fields can change or disrupt these signals (this is how an MRI machine works!).
It is believed in Eastern medicine that your ki can become stagnant, clogged, or sluggish due to physical or emotional upsets that cause blockages, thus unbalancing our systems. The practice of Rei-ki is a method of healing (either with touch or by having the hands “hover” over the body) that seeks to manipulate the energy fields of the receiver, with the intent to unblock these energetic channels or meridians and allow the ki to flow unimpeded, restoring natural balance to mind body and spirit. You may think of Reiki as Feng Shui for the body.
Many Reiki practitioners will mention or pay special attention to the body’s main chakras, as these are familiar to most Westerners. Some will also use crystals, sound, music, meditation, or other methods believed to enhance the transmission of energy.

The Principles of Reiki Are:
Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to every Living thing.

Reiki may be used to relieve anxiety and tension, quiet fears, bring emotional or mental clarity, stimulate the healing process, relieve pain and muscle soreness, and relax the mind and body. Some people experience emotional or physical release during and after a reiki session. Most recipients report this experience as being a feeling of peace and harmony similar to what is known as “yoga bliss”. You are relaxed without being sleepy, and may be more energized and alert while maintaining feelings of comfort and ease.
